Random text in magenta color: Its function as a filler text or as a tool to compare the visual effect of typefaces

Those texts used, in the production phase of websites and publications, as fillers of spaces destined for future contents, when the final texts have not yet been created, are defined as random. Also defined are dummy text, mannequin texts, placeholder texts. Sometimes songwriters also use it when composing their melodies, using them to sing the melody before having the final lyrics of the song available. The use of random texts would have been a common practice among composers as early as the 16th century.

The usefulness of meaningless content

Random texts are also used to show and compare the appearance of typefaces and layouts. These are usually texts with no semantic content. By virtue of its broad function as a filler text for layout, the non-legibility of the text is an element of great importance: human perception, in fact, is led to recognize certain patterns and repetitions in the text. The arbitrary distribution of the letters and the length of the "words", on the other hand, does not distract the eye which, in this way, can focus and judge the graphic effect and readability of the typefaces (typography) and the distribution of the text on the page (layout or composition light). For this reason, random texts are mostly made up of a more or less arbitrary sequence of words or syllables. Repetitive patterns do not risk confusing the overall impression and allow you to better compare different typefaces with each other. On the other hand, the fact that a random text appears realistic is an advantage, so that the effect of the layouts of the future publication is not compromised.

Incomprehensibility or readability? That is the question.

The best known example of a casual text is the "Lorem ipsum", whose origin dates back to the 16th century. Lorem ipsum is a text written in a pseudolatine language, which has more or less the appearance of "natural" Latin. It contains a number of real Latin words. Even this ancient random text is incomprehensible, however it mimics the rhythm of most European languages that have a Latin spelling. The advantage of the Latin origin and relative lack of meaning of Lorem ipsum is that the text does not attract the observer's attention to itself or distract it from the layout.

A disadvantage, however, is the fact that in Latin some letters occur more often than others and this can distort the visual effect. Furthermore, in Latin, capital letters are used only at the beginning of the sentence and for this reason the Lorem ipsum is not perfectly suited to the simulation of German language texts in which all nouns begin with a capital letter. For this reason, the text Lorem ipsum is limitedly suitable to act as a visual filler for German texts. If the purpose of a random text is to allow the characteristics of typefaces to be compared with each other, it may make sense to choose texts that employ as much as possible the letters and symbols typical of the language for which they are created.

There is currently a great deal of random readable text. They are mainly used with a merely filling function. These alternatives to classic Lorem ipsum lyrics are often funny and tell short, funny and sometimes nonsensical stories.

Origin and meaning of the Lorem ipsum texts

Most sources trace the Lorem ipsum to a text by Cicero dated 45 BC. A Latin professor traced its origins by looking for the occurrences of the rare word "consectetur" and recognizing its concordance in the passage De finibus bonorum et malorum ("I limits of good and evil ") of the Ciceronian text, which in the Middle Ages was quite well known:" Neque porro quisquam est, qui doLorem ipsum, quia dolor sit, amet, consectetur, adipisci velit [...] "(whose meaning is : "There is no one who loves pain in itself, who seeks it, or who wants it, since it is pain [...]"). Here is a typical Lorem ipsum text: "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipisici elit, sed eiusmod tempor incidunt ut labore et pain magna aliqua. Ut enim ad minim [...]".

It seems that the Lorem ipsum texts currently in use contain only fragments of the original text. So it can be assumed that over time a series of letters within the text have been moved or deleted. This would explain why today there are a number of variants of the text that differ very little from each other. Thanks to the dating of Lorem ipsum, there are no copyright problems.

In the 1960s, the text was also known outside the world of typographers and graphic designers and some excerpts were used for the Letraset sheets (the famous transparent sheets of transferable letters, widely used until the 1980s). Other versions of the text were later included also in DTP (Desktop-Publishing) programs such as PageMaker etc.

Automatic recognition of Lorem ipsum texts during the prepress phase

The spread of computers and layout programs has made random text even more popular. In the past some verses of the Lorem ipsum texts were repeated over and over, and it is for this reason that Cicero's text today is the basis of many random or generative texts of Lorem ipsum. The latter are able to automatically generate an indefinite amount of sections of Lorem ipsum texts, or other types of filler texts.

The phastic sequence of Lorem ipsum texts today is so widespread and used that many DTP programs can generate random texts starting with the "Lorem ipsum" sequence. A big advantage is that the "Lorem ipsum" sequence is now recognized by electronic prepress systems, so that when the sequence is recognized the system issues a warning message. This allows you to prevent filler texts from being printed in a publication that have remained there by mistake.

The fact that automatic search engines, for example, are unable to distinguish meaningful information from information without semantic content, has benefited some internet providers: the generation of targeted random texts, within which a specific combination of search terms, can lead to a substantial increase in access to search engines. In this way it has been obtained an increase in revenues from advertising which depend on the number of visits to a website.
